A semi-autobiographical feature based on real life events.
Fifteen-year-old Toni with cerebral palsy has spent her life in a special school and when rumours fly about it closing down is forced to think about what she wants to do the following year, with the rest of her life and questions her place in the world.
Her well meaning but overprotective parents, doctors and teachers control Toni’s world. Everything is done for her, never with her or by her. Toni is something to be ‘healed’ or ‘fixed’.
Expressing her desire to mainstream into the local High School Toni fights against all negative responses. Her only allies, her social worker, friend Dwayne and her faith. She wants to experience the HSC like a ‘normal student’ in the ‘normal world’.
Toni discovers her voice as school captain of the special school and during this time is inspired, and obsessed with Queens’ song ‘I want to break free’, which strengthens her determination to escape her ‘disabled world’ to belong to the ‘normal world’.
But, it is 1985, before the Disability Discrimination Act. Toni struggles to get around the school physically. No lifts, grab rails or accessible bathrooms. She struggles getting around in her manual wheelchair.
Toni’s biggest obstacle and most at stake are her thoughts and self perceptions; that she is powerless, a burden, imperfect, broken, less than and needy. But she must learn to over come these thoughts if she is to prove everyone wrong
But in the process she quickly realises that this ‘normal world’ isn’t as ‘normal’ as she thought. More time spent with the other girls she realises she has the same desires, doubts and crushes, like any teenage girl. As a singer-songwriter she composes her empowerment song, ‘This Girl’.
THIS GIRL is a universal story of desiring to belong and fit in. It is our story, a universal human story of what it means to find self-empowerment, purpose and finding our place in the world.
