Victoria, Australia

Lichen is a short environmental drama following a park ranger who discovers the critical levels of toxic air pollution surrounding his park, and must devotedly try to both warn the public of the danger and expose the industry responsible for it.

By premising moss and lichen as effective bio-indicators of pollution, this film tells an Australian story of how coal-fired power directly jeopardises the health of surrounding communities and the natural environment.

This film is a graduate piece for 4th Year Swinburne Film and Television students.

This film has a very strong environmental message about the effects of climate change, therefore we will need some serious and dedicated actors to pull off the gravity of the script.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone interested!

Anthony is a devoted Park Ranger and botanist based in Maddingley National Park. He’s a kind hearted and intelligent man, extremely hardworking in his field, and a dedicated carer for his ill father. When Anthony discovers harmful levels of toxic air pollution surrounding his park, he is determined to expose those responsible and protect the public from the health implications. He endeavours to get an expose published in a popular magazine before any more harm can be done.

Male, aged 35 to 45

Laurence is an extremely knowledgeable ex Park Ranger, soft-spoken and logical. He has taught everything he knows to his son Anthony, and acted as his mentor. Laurence is now irrefutably reliant on Anthony in battling a chronic respiratory sickness. Despite his illness, Laurence refuses to retire from his studies, and is mentally the same astute Park Ranger he was as a young man. He offers pragmatic and rational support in Anthony’s efforts to publish a crucial scientific expose.

Male, aged 60 to 70

James is a talented and proficient young writer for a highly successful Australian magazine. When Park Ranger Anthony approaches him with an environmental story to publish, James is unwilling to get involved. He’d rather comply with the stories he’d been assigned and not rock the boat by pitching controversial content. He’ll be courteous, sure, but his own career is the priority.

Male, aged 25 to 34

Editor 1/ Editor 2

The Editors work as highly authoritative interviewers for The Edge, an extremely popular Australian Magazine. The Editors receive a riveting pitch from a local Park Ranger concerned about harmful levels of toxic pollution in the air - and they’re all ears. Although they’re fascinated by the story, they’re not at all keen on printing a story with a specific culprit - especially when that culprit is a hugely powerful brown coal-burning power plant.
